Moving Time

I've started a new blog called Peer Pressure. Please go there, this one is frozen.

The hardware that this blog has been on since the start is getting a bit flakey and generally past its prime. It was suffering to such an extent that the blog has been down for the past couple of weeks. (Q6Z)

I've been saying for a few years that it is time to move the burningchrome.com domain. Now that the hardware is actually failing, I reckon that it is finally time. (Q70)

I'll probably move things by the end of this month. I'll keep the domain, but probably kill some content. Let me know if there's something here that ought not die. (Q71)

I don't reckon I want to bother with Movable Type any more. Any recommendations. I'd like something I can hack wiki and purple number integration into with relative ease. I don't want to edit in HTML. Learning something cool would be nice. Any suggestions? (Q72)

I've started a little framework called belay, based on Joe Gregorio's droppings (despite his advice). Maybe I'll write my own. Just what the world needs, yet another blog engine thing. (Q73)

I think I'm finally done gathering up all my Antarctica pictures and dredging up the memories for some semblance of a travelogue. (Q6V)

Some entries are longer than others. Most contain links to other pages that do not exist. I plan to fill in the blanks with information on the various penguins, the locations we visited, organizing the trip, details on how we ate, and things like that. http://www.flickr.com/photos/cdent/16193250/ (Q6M)

Last night Tanuki passed away. He was away at the special vet for a rhinoscopy to finally get some resolution to or at least some knowledge about his continuous suffering with an always infected, sneezy nose. Sometime overnight, while in recovery after a large unknown foreign body had been removed from his nasal cavities, his brain gave up and he was no longer able to breath on his own. Maybe a stroke, nobody's sure. (Q6N)

Tanuki was always a charmer, from the day we took him home from the shelter surrounded by kittens and cats that were far more cute at a superficial level. I will miss him terribly. (Q6O)

Obligatory iphone post

Iphone is obviously very cool, but I can't help but be a bit disappointed. I wanted to see Apple make a vote for simplicity. I want to see a small phone that is very good at making phone calls. (Q6A)

While complaining about this with Eric he reminded me of the evolution of the ipod: They went in two directions. They became more featured (pictures, video) in some models but they also became smaller and simpler in some other models (mini, shuffle, nano, shuffle gen 2). (Q6B)

I can't wait for the shuffle version of the iphone. The barest essentials in the smallest form packaged in that Apple spit and polish. (Q6C)

Socialtext Related Blogging

I've started doing my daily work blogging in public over at the Socialtext Open Wiki. This probably means that most of my socialtext, wiki, and collaboration related thought will end up over there. So if you're here for that sort of thing you might want to subscribe to that weblog's feed. (Q5Z)

It lacks, tragically, PurpleNumbers but maybe that will motivate me. I wrote Purple for Kwiki so Purple for Socialtext is not far off. Making it optional in shared spaces may be a bit of a shoot, but things are possible. (Q60)

I am, obviously, back from Antarctica. The trip was great. Details and photos to come, I'll link from here. (Q61)

Rainier Poster for You and Me

Update: Seb is the winner! He'll get a poster of this one. (Q57)

Back in late August of 2003 I went to Mt. Rainier with Sabrina for a few days. It was lovely and since then Mt. Rainier has become my favorite photographic subject. (Q4V)

On that trip I took: (Q4W)

    (Q4X)

Later, back in Indiana, to remind myself, I had a poster made. The poster has hung near my desk, wherever my desk happens to be, since then. (Q4Y)

I've since moved to Seattle, my access to Rainier is much easier, but for whatever reason, until yesterday I had only been back to the park once. Yesterday we finally went back, it was lovely again, and I had a somewhat improved camera. (Q4Z)

So now I want to make another poster, but I can't decide what photo use, so I'm asking you for help. View my pics of Mt. Rainier in Flickr and leave some comments saying something like "Make this one a poster" on the one or more that you think would be the best choice for poster. Also leave some way I can identify you for later. I'll make two big posters of the one that gets the most votes. (Q50)

One goes to me to go on the wall next to my desk. The other one goes to someone selected from the voters. Either the person who clearly was most into playing this silly game, or someone randomly chosen from the list of people who voted on the winner. Voting stops on the 15th. If no one votes I'll cry like a big baby and take my poster and go home. If people pick a sucky photo (at my sole discretion) because they are party poopers, I'll say so, and we'll move on to some other photo. (Q51)

Leave comments either on the photo pages in Flickr or here, with a link to the photo page. (Q52)

For a photo to be considered for the poster, it needs to present a view of the mountain as its primary subject or one of its primary subjects. It does not need to be in the collections linked below, but it does need to be a photograph that I took that is stored on Flickr. (Q53)

I made two sets from the trip yesterday. Part one is the stuff I thought was best or some reason tickled me the most. Part two is the stuff that still seemed pretty good or I thought my family might like to see. (Q54)

There's also the rainier tag at flickr. Not all of those photos are of Mt. Rainier. Some are on Mt. Rainier. (Q55)

Thanks. (Q56)

Socialtext Bubble Bath Party

Many of my coworkers are sweating it out in Portland at OSCON where Socialtext announced that the socialtext code base is now available for download by anybody, whenever they like. (Q4K)

This is cool and all, and I'm very proud of us for doing it, but the part I like most about the announcement is toward the end: (Q4L)

Socialtext also announced its new Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) Application Programming Interface to enable developers to integrate and extend Socialtext Open. Documentation is available at http://socialtext.net/stoss/?SOAP_API (Q4M)

This is yet another piece of the pie in opening up the system. Open code matters, but so do open systems and open data. The SOAP API is one phase in multiple phases of work happening to make it easy to get stuff in and out of Socialtext; to play in the growing pool of tools that take stuff from here and there, fiddle around a bit and put it there and here. This is what makes the internet fun and most useful. (Q4N)

The last time I got this excited about remote API stuff for Socialtext the tools that were created never made it out to the world, mostly because the Atom Publishing Protocol wasn't quite there yet (it's damn close now) but also because the Socialtext side of the code wasn't out there. (Q4O)

The situation is different now: SOAP has been around for awhile; the Socialtext code is done and awaiting release; and the SOAP service will be included in Socialtext Open when the SOAP code is released. It's tweakable. (Q4P)

But wait, that's not all. SOAP is not everybody's favorite (certainly not mine). Coming early fall, a far more featured REST-based API (with at least some segment of APP support). You get the data so you can make up your own methods. Some good fun will come of this. (Q4Q)

Scene Change

It's been a busy month and a bit. (Q49)

    (Q4A)

Went to Hawaii, which was lovely, only to return home to the landlord requesting are departure on account he wanted to sell up. Meanwhile I had more trips lined up. (Q4B)

    (Q4C)

So we quickly hunted for a place, quickly got a jones for Alki, and luckily found a place with a nice view before I went off for the Nth annual boat trip where N is something like 6 or 7. There should be some photos here but I left that to an aspiring professional so we'll have to wait on his fiddling. Fiddler? (Q4D)

Back for a week of moving and now off to Palo Alto for a much needed work gathering during which we will conceive, hatch and bring to maturity good stuff. There will also be sushi. (Q4E)
